So, here we are, at the decks page and I hope you will dissect and rebuild these for yourself, but if you wanna try it out first, that's fine with us!
This is Steve Bailey's deck from the first Doom at SELWG event, see Mythos Events Page for further details....
BOSTON A-GO-GO - a 53 Card Tournament deck
This is a deck that I've been using for about 2-3 years now. Its based on utilising the use of speed play, and when it works its very very fast. It has some nice interactive play to interfere with opponent's if they look like getting close. However this deck is not to play in friendly matches, as your opponent will be rightly pissed off from all the cheese therein.
Investigator: ~ Mad German Inventor ~ Knows German
This investigator has a low min/max which enables you to speed through your deck when discarding to draw more cards. Education (17) is quite high and helped me to go first when I most needed it. The fact that he just knows German (not English) is essential for one of my adventures.
Adventures (4):
Secrets of the Silver Twilight (+8/+2) x1
A Heroic Rescue (+7/+3) x1
Seeking Everlasting Life (+5/+1) x2
The overlap between these three adventures is overwhelming. I base my strategy around having as many required cards in play as possible and so once one adventure is completed, 95% of the other adventures will be completed too. I only need to play one or two cards at most to enable the completion of the second adventure, after which the much hated SEL1 is a doddle.
The deck can be played using either SOTST or AHR first, but my preference is for AHR to be the first completed adventure, as it requires two locations. Once that's done, SOTST and SEL1 can both be completed whilst sitting at one location - this is very much a 'couch potato' deck.
The deck is based in Boston and utilises the power of the event 'Surprise Meeting' to enable the Mad German to meet Allies from different locations. In my view, Surprise Meeting is probably the most useful and efficient card to power the engine of this type of deck.
Locations (9):
1x Copp's Hill Burying Ground x1 (cemetery requirement - AHR)
2x City Morgue (cemetery requirement - AHR)
3x Silver Twilight Lodge (SOTST & AHR)
1x Arkham Sanitarium
1x Asylum For The Deranged
1x Conanicut Island Private Hospital
Therapy is always useful...the three sanitariums provide me with +17 sanity and an escape route from Serial Killers, Phobias and Knee Deep in Doom decks.
The key to the deck is to play the cemetery first and then chill out at the Silver Twilight Lodge for the rest of the game, playing your adventures around this one location.
Allies (15):
2x Howard Lovecraft (MSGS) which joins with
2x Mrs Sonia Lovecraft (MSGS)
They are both in New York, but the Surprise Meeting allows them to be found in Boston. The great thing is that they * join * and this makes AHR very fast. Wait until both are in your hand with a Surprise Meeting, don't waste time by playing them separately.
2x Thomas F Malone (Boston)
2x Dr Marinus Bicknell Willet (Providence & Surprise Meeting & Epidemic protection)
1x Dr Carl Jung (Any Sanitarium & phobia removal)
2x Arthur Munroe (Any City, lowers min for speed play)
2x John Scott (Boston & Corrupt Cultist)
1x Carl Stanford (Boston & Corrupt Cultist)
1x Simon Orne (Boston & Corrupt Cultist)
AHR requires Author (HP), Reporter (Arthur), Doctor (Willet or Jung), Private Eye (Malone), Wife (Mrs HP) and Corrupt Cultist (Scott, Stanford or Orne).
SOTST requires 3 allies (3 from HP, Mrs HP, Arthur, Willet, Jung or Malone) and Scott or Stanford.
SEL1 requires 2 steadfast allies (2 from HP, Mrs HP, Arthur, Willet, Jung or Malone) and a Corrupt ally (1 from Scott, Stanford or Orne).
Artifacts (2):
2x Cast-Iron Skillet (MSGS)
Not only does this help you gain san, its going to stick around play for a while as it gets passed to another ally if its original owner is buried. Useful for completing AHR second if needs be.
Monsters (4):
1x Father Dagon
1x Yithian
1x Colour Out Of Space (Limited)
1x Shoggoth Lord
These are needed for Greater Monster requirement (SOTST). Yithian is great fun, swapping places with allies. Shoggoth Lord can be played as an ally, making it easier to control the completed requirements for SOTST.
Events (11):
4x Surprise Meeting (Engine of the Deck)
3x Camel (Quick ride to the sanitarium through the streets of Boston on a Camel anyone?)
1x Yithian Mental Contact
2x Flee to Special Room
1x Swarm of Insects
The deck is defensive in nature with the Flee to Special Rooms. I was expecting more interfering play, but the deck can be much nastier with the inclusion of Unexpected Calamity. I lost a few turns when my passes were cancelled out by In The Nick Of Time - the Calamities would put this deck on turbo speed.
The Swarm of Insects helps re-use the gate of the Silver Twilight Lodge, saves messing around moving to other locations. Its also useful for burying any day/night events you might suspect are needed for someone else's adventure.
Tomes/Spells (2/6):
Tomes
Letter From a Friend (English, Skull)
Book of Eibon (English/Skull)
Both fulfil the requirements of all 3 adventures, SOTSW as they're not in German, AHR (just says tome) and SEL1 (tome, skull).
Spells
2x Resurrection
2x Awful Doom of Cerrit
1x Green Mist of Doom
1x Darkness of the Void
Resurrection is obvious for SEL1, but it also can help bring back allies required for 2 or more adventures. Darkness of the Void makes it night - forever! Or until someone plays a night event. This is a powerful interfering card, as it hampers day events and droughts required for adventures - especially The Strange Case of Charles Fort. It also helps re-use of the Silver Twilight Lodge's gate and makes Green Mist of Doom nastier.
The Awful Doom of Cerrit is one of the top 5 interfering spells printed. Discarding a random ally can slow down an opposing deck dramatically. Any of these spells can be played on the three Corrupt Cultists and cast at no extra cost in the combat round of the turn - so there's no need to waste turns when interfering with your opponent's card play.
Ways to Defeat This Deck
Unfortunately, there's quite a few strategies that would blow this deck out of the water.
1] Wilbur Whately could steal the tome required for all 3 adventures.
2] A steady stream of Epidemics (or Televisions) would slow this deck down and wipe out advantages gained in speed play.
3] Ways in which to discard allies are a constant cause for concern. The appearance of Nightgaunts are somewhat frightening, even for Carl Stanford!
4] Frivolous Lawsuit was designed to butcher 'couch potato' decks. The only card that can discard tomes.
5] Townsfolk Riots & Terrorist Strikes will force my Investigator to get off the couch at the Silver Twilight Lodge.
6] Serial Killers will force my Investigator to get off the couch at the Silver Twilight Lodge.
7] Sphere of Nath or Green Mist of Doom is all rather unhelpful.
This is my "Grand Tour" deck. It's the first I built and I had only a single Miskatonic booster box to work from, so just swap cards for those you prefer. I have joined SIX Living Dead with this deck in a single play!
