2002 WINNING REPORT & DECKLIST

Just a quick report about the 5th Selwg Shootout. It was won by my Sioux Spirit Warriors deck (listed below). The tournament was 4 rounds (best of 3). I managed to go 2-0, 2-1, 2-0 and 2-0 to make it to the final.
Along the way were Paul, Mark, Humphrey and Laurence. Of these the most entertaining deck was Humphrey's, were he made very effective use of Hanging Judge Gabriel. I met Nick Ashton in the final. He was playing a BJ Rachel's Gang deck and was aggressive but couln't defeat the Sioux.
The deck is a Sioux Brawler based on Jason Hawthorne's deck (which won the Origins World Championships). I tweaked it to suit my play style better and found it very efficient to use. Billy and Seeking Fury help to cycle cards through and get a Brawl or Throw Down in hand. Singing Feather starts against the Texas Rangers.
Considering all the mutliples of values, the deck didn't really cheat that much. Luckily the worst cheatin' card that affected me was The North End. I didn't see any Devil Bunnies (phew). The Start Agains and Move Alongs are there to ace any cheating cards that are lurking about.
Eagle Rock exp2 was the real star of the show. He would join a posse even if he was miles away. And pistol whip is all a bit futile against him too.
The name comes from the football fever that's sweeping the nation after England's progress into the Quarter Finals of the World Cup. Come On The Eng-Er-Land!!!
A special thanks to Rob Lee who helped me test the balance of the deck and to give me ideas on how to improve it.

How The Deck Works
This deck has now won the SELWG Shootout twice in a row (2000 and 2001). It’s a fast and unforgiving deck designed to out-control and out-manoeuvre the opponent in the early stages of the game. Games usually take about 2-3 turns for a win.
The deck stalls when there aren’t any deeds in your opening hand (despite having 20 deeds in the deck). This gives the opponent time to build up some influence, which account for some of the tougher games I had.
The actions are influence reducing and complement the deeds and dudes nicley. Alfred is a must in any Sweetrock deck worth its salt. The key to playing the deck is not to be afraid to ace your own deeds to be able to afford to empty your hand and draw some lovely new cards. The more cards that this deck has in play, the harder it will be for the opponent to manage the effect you are having on the game.
The deck starts with 8 influence and should be able to out-chess your enemies. The deck also shoots well, with Mad Dog able to slobber over a Straight Flush in diamonds and clubs. Its not uncommon to get Full Houses of DMH either, but the latter is unlikely. It doesn’t cheat in lowball and often has a high card to win the extra cash and the initiative. Ezzie doesn’t bother me as about 14 cards that are Ace or 2 value.

How To Beat The Deck
1. Play Original Maze Rats. This deck will have a tough time trying to keep these horrible blood sucking leeches down, although Turnabout’s Fair Play will work well on Denton.
2. Play the union Train Depot. Its hard for this deck to manage out of town deeds as well as in town one. Usually my dudes are spread far and wide and cant cope with too many shootouts.
3. Play turnabout’s Fair Play when I ace a strike or use Panning For Gold. That would make my stomach churn, and you may see some crying too.

Quick Tournament Report
Round One
Bad Maps v Chris Farnam (2-0)
Chris played well, but started with only 3 influence. Had me worried a bit with the Maze Runner, but a nice easy start.

Round Two
Bad Maps v Deputy John (Mark) (2-1)
Mark was more challenging with his ‘free’ Law Dogs Shotgun deck. Hunter’s Office and Light Stalker were churning out the guns and looked aggressive. It cheated a lot and Divided Loyalties helped me win one game. Mark won the second game by using the Union Train Depot just when I was about to win myself! The third game went according to plan as I reduced Mark’s influence enough to win.

Round Three
Bad Maps v Andrew Davidson (2-1)
Andrew was playing his Knicknevin deck which was somewhat frightening. It’s a powerful cheater, pulling 4 or 5 of a kind with a 0 draw, backed up with Applegate’s ability. I won the first game by using Divided Loyalties on Applegate and having him discarded by refusing to pay his upkeep. The second game he won by sending a dude to my home for a ‘Friendly Game’ and taking 6 GR from me. It was the first time I’ve seen that card used so effectively! The third game I won by accepting a shootout between Mad Dog and a few of his dudes. The Dog came up with a Straight Flush with DHJ! That gave me the edge to win the game.

Round Four
Bad Maps v Gareth (2-0)
Gareth had the most interesting deck to play against. He was using a Whately EF Shooter with some horrible combos involving Dunwitch Casino and Basement – ever terror was gaining 2 influence by sitting there! With the Fear level rising and LGM exp out, I was happy to get by this worthy opponent. Gareth plays very fast and consequently misses card effects in play. One game was lost by sending Erza to the Seventh Sign Strike, where she promptly dropped dead. In another, he missed the fact that I has a Quarantine in play (as did I). Nonetheless, the second game was also won by Divided Loyalties when he Massacred me with a cheating hand, which enabled me to reclaim a strike he was controlling with one of his dudes.

Final
I was clearly in the final and Vince & Andrew has to slug it out to see who would face me. Andrew Knicknevin’d his way to victory, so it was a re-match, best of one.
Bad Maps v Andrew (1-0)
This was a very quick game. Two events (Knicknevin and Quarantine) came out in lowball. This meant that we could only go to Town Square to avoid the demon. I played a 2 CP strike, Andrew moved Applegate and Mortimer to Town Square. Mad Dog followed and called out Applegate. That Dog sure serves his master well, he pulled me a Straight Flush and then a Straight with a DHJ. Game over! Knicknevin had left Andrew on just one influence to my 2 control! This only goes to support the Mad Arab’s advice "Do Not Call Up Any That Thou Canst Put Down".

The top four players played for the title as follows:

  1. 1st/2nd Steve Bailey vs Hedley Coppock
  2. 3rd/4th Mark Denny vs Andrew Davidson
Steve won the title, a home win!, Hedley came in second whilst the most thrilling game of the day was the 3rd/4th play off wherein Andrew beat Mark on a tie break!!!!
Team SELWG pooled together all resources and managed to give prizes for all 14 places!!! A special prize was awarded by Ken Roberts for the outstanding player of the day...And that went to Chris Farnan, who against the odds, managed not to win a single game all day! He did, however, cause a few of those 1/2 results!!!!
This tournament, of course, was also a legal round in the SELWG Aftermath League and those results will be added to the page in the very near future...
