Camden Callout 10 - Who's The Daddy?

A big thanks to all those who came to the 10th Camden Callout for our Sealed Deck and Boot Hill Booster Draft.
I was impressed by this booster draft environment - the Boot Hill boosters were excellent to draft with and even when the reject cards came round there was still plenty of choice in the boosters. The Pinebox Homes were OK, next time we'll try the Boot Hill ones. All the factions were represented, 12 players in all participated... Here they are in no special order

TEXAS RANGERS ---
Mark "Deputy John" Denny
FLOCK ---
Steve Gordon
MAZE RATS ---
Laurence from Exeter
COLLEGIUM ---
Sy "Blackjack" Hughes
SIOUX UNION ---
Paul Jones
WHATELEYS ---
Graham Shanks
LOST ANGELS ---
Andrew "The Wanderer" Davidson
SWEETROCK ---
Matt Bowles
BLACKJACKS ---
Chris "Yella" Farnham
LAW DOGS ---
Nick (the MP)
AGENCY ---
Steve "Badmaps" Bailey
FLOCK ---
Paul from Sheffield (thanx for making the trip!!!)

As it happened there were two Flock outfits (who unfortunatley met during one of the rounds).

Round One

Steve B (L) v Steve G (W) v Paul from Sheffield (L)

Nick (L) v Mark (W) v Andrew (L)

Chris (L) v Graham (W) v Matt (L)

Paul Jones (L) v Sy (L) v Laurence (W)

Round Two

Mark (L) v Paul Jones (W) v Chris (L)

Paul from Sheffield (L) v Nick (L) v Sy (W)

Graham (W) v Steve G (L) v Laurence (L)

Matt (L) v Steve B (W) v Andrew (L)

After two rounds time was running short, so we went to the final. There was one double winner (Graham) and 6 single winners.

The Final

  • Steve G -- FLOCK
  • Graham -- WHATELEYS
  • Laurence -- MAZE RATS
  • Sy Hughes -- COLLEGIUM
  • Mark Denny -- TEXAS RANGERS
  • Paul Jones SIOUX UNION

The game started with Get a Rope being played on the first lowball - it was going to be one of those games which much bloodshed. After an hour, everyone had lost dudes in shootouts and they were roundier than the WWF guys, which probably scared them away.
There being no clear winner after 90 minutes, I called time at the end of nightfall. Each player then had one action after the lowball round.
Sy Hughes had the foresight to play Double Dealin' during lowball, so positioning himself as far away from the lowball winner as possible. This ensured that he was able to wait until after the other players had gone to make his move to win.
Mark used Bartholemew to move two dudes to control point deeds. Sy took one of them back which was enough and Graham arsoned one of Mark's deeds - which failed.
Despite that, no-one else stopped Sy Hughes from having equal control but more influence and he so was declared the Winner!

Congratulations to Sy who won the Rio Grande game "Wyatt Earp" - his first tournament victory in Doomtown (who was it that said Sy never wins tournaments.....?)

This also means that the COLLEGIUM are the DADDY of Gomorra - they got more gadgets than MI6.

Camden Callout 7

After a marathon weekend of gaming at Gencon 2001, 8 hardened hombres showed up at High Noon to battle for the 7th Camden Callout title. They were:-
  • Dave 'Eats The Trash'   Sioux Original
  • Yuit 'Who Wants' Sum Vong   BJ Original
  • Andrew 'The Wanderer' Davidson   SW Original
  • Sy 'Blackjack' Hughes   BJ Original
  • Paul Francis   Law Dogs NHO
  • Steve Gordan   Sioux Original
  • Daniel 'Scrappy Kid'   Flock:COA
  • Rob 'Speed of the Wolf' Lee   Law Dogs NHO
This was the first time I saw Dave since Gencon 1999, and I was still impressed by the number of earrings its possible to get on one ear!!!!! He reminded us of his 'God Hand' draw of 4 curses on the first turn, in the 1999 tournament and wondered if lightning could strike twice.
The rounds went like this:

Round One
Rob beat Yuit
Dave beat Andrew
Steve beat Paul
Scrappy Kid beat Sy

Round Two
Paul beat Yuit
Andrew beat Sy
Scrappy Kid beat Steve
Rob beat Dave

Round Three
Scrappy Kid beat Andrew
Steve beat Rob
Sy beat Paul
Dave beat Yuit

So after three rounds, the rankings were these:
  1. Scrappy Kid  WWW
  2. Steve G  WLW
  3. Rob Lee  WWL
  4. Dave  WLW
  5. Andrew  LWL
  6. Paul  LWL
  7. Sy  LLW
  8. Yuit  LLL

Yuit was having a bad day - apparently she was using Steve Wallace's Gencon deck, but to no avail. Dave was humming along with his curses and Andrew was experimenting with a puppet Sweetrock deck. Rob and Paul were both clearing up the town with some Hunter's Office wanted action, and Sy went ballistic with the Hanging Judge, who killed 90% of the dudes on the table.
That left Scrappy's spell bonanza deck vs Steve's Mountain Lions and LDS in the final. Scrappy Kid decided to ace one of his dudes with his home ability to search for an event hoser - Roll the Dice, consequently giving him a lock over the game. After that spell after spell went on Miss Lilly, and she wiped the floor with everyone.
Congratulations to the Scrappy Kid! He won "Doomtown of Bust" sourcebook, covering the ins and outs of the first story arc.
This is Daniel's deck in full:

"Child Abuse"
STARTING DUDES
Christopher Hill, Avarice, Miss Lilly, Idleness, Karl Rundgren
5 INF/16 GR
SPADES DIAMONDS CLUBS HEARTS
Elijah exp. Reserve judgement Strike Flight of Angels x2 Sleeping with the Shadows
The Drifter Gypsy's Tent Red Handed Full Moon
Solomon Bat's Breath Mine Between the Cracks Light of the Lord
Basil Whatley Hunter's Moon Strike Shallow Grave Roll the Dice
Becky Hendricks The Bath House Eureka's Rage Calm x3
Singing Feather Misdirection Babble On x2
Low Profile Fire & Brimstone
Last Rites
Test of Faith
First Bowl x3
Puppet x4
Third Bowl
Helpin' Hands
Confession x3
Fourth Bowl
Cloak
Shadow Man

Scrappy explained that Christopher Hill is the 'engine' of the deck as he can cast both Hexes and Miracles. Avarice can go look for the few strikes in the deck to get some production up and running and once Karl makes money, he is aced with the home's ability. This is very versatile, as Scrappy can search for any card he needs to deal with the situation facing him.
The other characters in the deck are replacements for the starting dudes if anything horrible happens in the first turn. Singing Feather is there to upset Ezzie and Becky deals with Dixie Rail nonsense.
With the actions, Shallow Grave supports the low number of characters in the deck if they get aced, which can then be brought back into play with the home's ability. The cheating cards are obviously to punish wanted dudes, which this deck thrives on. Eureka's Rage gives a whole new hand of spells to put on his characters.
The spells are designed to make your dudes wanted, boot them, rip out their influence, control and ace them and use Calm, Shadow Man and Cloak to prevent shootouts along the way. A very effective deck!
So Well Done to Daniel, and good luck at Durham University.

This was an interesting event, as some of the normal players were in Colombus, Ohio for the World's...Therefore, we lesser mortals all had a chance to shine and suprisingly, 2 out of the 3 finalists were the same as CC#5! STRATEGY

Get Strikes out ASAP to create plenty of Ghost Rock income early on to pay for Gadgets and more Dudes. None of the strikes have any Control points so hopefully opponents will not bother too much about them. Create as many Gadgets as quickly as possible. All 15 have a difficulty of 5 or 6 so all will create a Control Point for me every time. As lowest value in the deck is "7 all are guaranteed to succeed every time as well !
All Dudes other than the Starting Posse are Studs. Eric "Santa" Zarkov creates free Ray Guns which when given to the likes of Mr Slate Exp., Peevie Exp., Eagle Rock etc. make nasty 6/7 Stud Dudes ! (Or 8/10 Studs using those Flaming Barrels & Hot -Loaded Rounds !!) As deck is stacked with only 5 values pulling Full Houses in shootouts should be no problem. Use Benny to reduce cost of Gadgets by 2 and obviously make full use of Christmas Day which will come once every 3 turns !
"The Claw" allows you to "Turtle" at home safe in the knowledge that you can send home booted opponents Dudes who may call you out if you dont fancy fighting them. Alternatively make opponents dudes wanted with "Red-Handed" if they cheat and then Lynch Mob them or give them some "Mob Justice" if they dare to call you out at home. If necessary send out your Studs tooled up with Ray Guns and Zappers to destroy the enemy or drive them back home so that you can take control of the town.

The Deck In Play On The Day

Both my first 2 round games and the final were all very close run affairs indeed !!! I was fortunate in the first 2 rounds that I got plenty of strikes out within the first few rounds of play and also created plenty of Gadgets early on as well. Fortunately none of my opponents in any of my games attempted to cut off my Ghost rock supply by taking control of my Strikes which meant that I was always very quickly producing 10 plus GR per turn. With free Ray Guns, Benny Hibbs ability and regular Christmas Days affording Gadgets and new Dudes was no problem. Also in both the first 2 games I managed to get 2-3 copies of The Claw out as well which really helped. I even managed to Lynch a few Dudes but never got to use Mob Justice though !! The deck obviously cheated occasionally in Low Ball but on the whole I got away with it with just 2 "Yellow Traitors" being played on me all afternoon.
The Final was really weird in that even though I have 15 Gadgets in the deck unbelievably I did not get one into my play hand until round 4 I think !!! Fortunately the "Hughes Gang" opponents Sy and Chris seemed more intent on having a go at each other as I did not seem to stand a chance of winning for most of the game ! However as I had got some strikes out I was building up a nice Ghost Rock pile and luckily for me I managed to create a whole pile of Gadgets towards the end of the game and in the last couple of turns sent out a couple of my tooled up Dudes to take Control of a couple of the opponents deeds to sneak a last gasp victory !!!!!!!

Camden Callout 5

Hi all and thanks to everyone who came to draw six shooters at CC #4. The table lists the players in order of finishing...

So congratulations again to Yuit who's our first double champion, and she wins a box of Do Unto Others, and to Andrew who came second and gets a free box of boosters.
Looking at the metagame (as far as is possible from this small tournament) it seems as if the Maze Rats and Sweetrock are hotly contesting first place - as least in UK anyway. The Maze Rats has a strong following here anyway, helped by Gerry's UK Gencone win. The Law Dogs however are dying a death round these parts as all three LD players failed to get into the top four. Perhaps they need to rethink their strategy!?!?!

Its only left for me now to list Yuit's deck and hope to see you all for the next CC#5 (date to be announced). I didn't play against Yuit today, but the key to her deck seems to be flexibility. It can cope with most decks and can start callouts with the Wild Dingo's, hence the name of the deck. Cup of Joe is also a very powerful card for the likes of The Swarm, but to re-use Ezzie a second time a Good Stiff Drink is also needed.
The power of the deck also comes from the outfit ability, to leech off opponent's deeds and force them to fight. An interesting deck design!

This is very much a Fu Leng BJ swarm deck, the nice and interesting twist being the Confederate Barracks making life even easier for the BJ's as they make dudes to make money to make more dudes to make more money. The game is won by playing the The Lode or the New Town Hall and probably swamping both with a vast amount of dudes.
The deck is also very aggressive in the number of jobs in it (five in total), with plenty of Deputise to keep the drifters earn their upkeep. I can see Bribing the Town Council being used to fetch a deputise if its needed urgently. There's only one cheating card in the whole deck however, so it relies heavily on Mr Bones.
Starting with Rhett is nice in that you can put pressure on the other player from the beginning, by sitting in their home and stealing their money. The same can be said for Laurence come to that, but this applies to deeds, not locations.
Of the dudes, Devil Bats is very much essential in any swarm deck and Megan can be useful calling out while booted. What strikes me is the cheapness of the dudes ensuring cood card cycling. The more dudes a player has on the table, the more chance they have of winning overall. This deck probably aims to get full houses & dirty 4/kinds in shootouts.

This is a typical Hunter's Office Deck. Use the Full Moon to control someone easy to pay upkeep for, and make another dude wanted - use other people's dudes to clean up the town. Failing that, use the Bounty Hunter in the time honoured way.
There's quite a few ways to make dudes wanted - Confession, Warrant & a Red Handed. Ghost rock Fever is to hose strikes - sometimes it can affect my deeds too, but I'd rather have something that's anti-strike. Major earthquake's dont fit in terms of numbers.

All the weapons come in for cheap, especailly Corky's Sidearm, which is a special bonus. The Fear is used to boot dudes and so its easier to call them out. The deck is strong at shooting - usually Full Houses and 4/5 of a Kind, legal. The deck cheats too - but the more I can play, the more it degenrates, and the less it cheats. And that's it really. This is how it did in the Camden Callout in order to win...There were the 4 rounds...

Round One Law Dogs (Me) v Landed Maze Rats (Darren) I'm always V. cautious about playing the rats, quite a formidable unit. Luckily, Darren only started with 2 dudes (Sun-Jen & Chin Le). The bounty hunters made short work of them and I went into his home, called him out, won the game.

Round Two Law Dogs (Me) v Sweetrock original (Chris) Chris is 13 but he's mean player. It started off with me using a Full Moon to control his Cassidy and then using her to call out his wanted dudes in his home. That cleared him out a bit, and I got a bit overconfident. I sent in the Drifter, but Chris uses 2x Sun in Yer eyes. Dead Drifter! I then sent in Mad Dog with a Double-Barrelled Shotgun, acing Hoodoo using the shotgun. Chris' Wall Crawler was in the posse. I reveal a cheatin' hand (5 fives) and Chris snakebites me! Arrggh! Then there's a lot of manouvring, the result of which evens out the game. Luckily, another Full moon comes up, and I scrape a win. A very close game.

Round 3 Law Dogs (me) v Souix original (Robe Lee) Rob's another deadly player to try to beat. He cursed up, used Speed of the Wolf and Rain Dance to get going. A Full Moon took care of a couple of dudes, killing Ferret's eye and the game continued. My memory's a bit muddled, but Wise Cloud tried to take me on at one of my strikes, lost, used Medicine and I lost Cassidy. I hired the drifter to kill Wise Cloud, won lowball a couple of turns, killed him and again was saved by Medicine and Invisibility. I paid for the Drifter's upkeep (with a DB-Shotgun) and in the final part of the game, we ended on a draw as Rob cursed me and I aced his Singing Feather. Another close match.

Round 4 Law Dogs (me) v Agency (orignial) Nick This game was a dream for the Law Dogs. Nick started with Sister Mary exp, Windows Derek, and Josef N-R. All 3 dudes had the value of 6. In went the Bounty Hunter, got a DHJ and Blam! They all died. I went over to the Road House Nick kindly put into play with the Drifter to win the game. Nick plays The Amazing Xemo(!) and he got frightened by the Fear. Game Over.

Final Law Dogs (me) v Souix (Vince) Vince kindly came up from Brighton to participate in the game, and his deck was on a roll. I started with my usual Full Moon trick, acing a couple of his dudes. The Bounty Hunter killed another. Vince responded by Kidnapping Rev Johnson and later kidnapping Jessie Radcliffe, both of which were successful. I play the Lode, and sit on it witheverything I have (Mad Dog, Jessie Freemont, Reggie Cornell & Mr Bones). Vince responds by sending in Eagle Rock, who dies - and then decides not to risk his other dudes. The Lode builds up to 5CP's and time is called - Vince decides not to fight with Tioga Joe/Little running Bear, and I win the game!
